For wildlife viewing, July and August are the best times to visit Southeast Alaska. Salmon fill the creeks, juicy blueberries cover their bushes, bears and wolves can sometimes be viewed (from a safe distance) feeding on salmon. The scenery, flora and fauna of this region are truly spectacular. Join Naturalist/Guide Chris Evers for a unique look at the wildlife of Frederick Sound and Tongass National Forest. This is marine biologists' paradise and is famous for the Humpback whales that arrive each year from the waters of Mexico and Hawaii. This is peak season for viewing marine mammals. Much of our time will be spent paddling, very stable sea kayaks, as we scout the inshore waters of Frederick Sound in search of whales, seals and sea lions. The tide pools are teeming with life: urchins, anemones, giant sunflower stars, fragile brittle stars, sea cucumbers and more. Eagles are a common sight, bears, wolves, moose, and deer can also be seen. Typical trips are nine days in duration but custom packages are available. Trips can be organized with base camps or hotel/bed and breakfast options. Kayaking is not required to enjoy this amazing region.
